We've all heard it! Don't wash your hair before your colour appointment! Is that true?
Let's get into it!
When I became a stylist many decades ago, the formulations were stronger, and I was taught that having a dirty scalp would create a barrier that would protect the scalp. Here is why your hair should be clean.
Scalp and product build up- Dirty hair often has oil sweat, product build up. This can prevent colours, toners and treatments from absorbing properly. It can create an alkaline environment that can create irritation when chemicals are introduced to the scalp.
Colour accuracy, oils and dirt can affect how colour processes leading to uneven tones or compromised results.
Timing, if your stylist needs to cleanse build up before a service it will add extra time and change the pricing of the appointment.
Scalp health and comfort. Having dirty hair during your colour service can lead to irritation or discomfort during and even after the service.
Myth busting. Old-school advice said dirty hair “helps colour stick.” Modern products and techniques are designed for clean hair. That myth is outdated. Back then, formulas were harsher and could irritate the scalp, so a little natural oil helped act as a buffer. But here’s the thing: modern professional colour lines (like Davines, Kevin Murphy, K18 etc.) are formulated to be far more gentle and more effective on clean hair.
Clean hair = the best canvas.
Your stylist can still protect your scalp with professional techniques (not your three-day oil slick)
Coming in fresh means your color, toner, or treatment will last longer and look healthier.written
